'June Break' at the Governor's Western Residence, Asheville
Art Show, Talk, Lunch and Demo
The Western Region of WSNC hosted the June 16 event for 53 guests. They came from 18 different cities in the region. The breezes cooled the pravillion where coffee and muffins were a welcome to everyone at 10:00 AM. Joe Miller, of Cheap Joe's Art Stuff provided each guest with a 'goodie' bag and additional items for doorprizes.
After a quick tour of the residence, Ann Vasilik gave her presentation of, 'The stupid judge has no taste and 100 reasons why I didn't get into the show' (see below). The talk covered artists personal expectations for their art, conditions inside and outside of the artist's control when entering juried shows, the fun and gamble when entering, misteps artists comit and the benefits of joining a professional society and entering shows.Suzanne Shaffer, Exhibition chair and John Anderson, her assistant, helped by acting out receiving a shipped piece of art where the shipper did everything wrong. Parrish Rhodes read a humerous letter 'to the show chairman' about her concerns about getting into the show. Everyone had had a good laugh!
A salad lunch was served with the able assistance of Myra Ramsey and Mary Harper.
The artists brought 22 paintings for the art show and were on display for the day. After lunch each artist was introduced and their painting identified. They were asked for one word that would describe their art or themselves. There was only one duplication! Door prizes were given and Jim Morrison of Hendersonville was introduced as the Demo artist and speaker. Jim painted a woodland scene using masking fluid to preserve 'sky holes' in trees and making texture. His relaxed, easy style made everything clear and entertaining. The following for your pleasure is the 'letter to the showchairman'.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a success.
Ann Vasilik, WSNC Western Region Chair-person
