History

Chartered in 1972 with 18 members, the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Inc. (WSNC) was organized under the direction of A. Stuffer Myers, a prominent artist and businessman, from Lexington, NC.

Dixie Browning, a Winston-Salem artist, became the first president of the organization in September of 1972. The first membership meeting, attended by 80 artists, was held in Greensboro with guest artist Barlcay Sheaks. The first exhibition, juried by Frank Getlein, was held at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in the Spring of 1973. Incorporation of WSNC occurred in 1979. I

WSNC has experienced significant growth since its founding in 1972 with membership numbers exceeding 500. The membership includes dedicated artists from all over North Carolina who share a passion for the watercolor arts and who pursue opportunities for its purposeful expression. A volunteer Board of Directors supervises the WSNC activities.

This nation's watercolor societies reflect the evolution of a rich tapestry of historical trends in American watercolor painting. WSNC is proud of its contribution to this nationwide movement. The Society invites anyone interested in promoting the arts. and advancing watercolor as a major artistic medium to support WSNC by becoming a member.
